Without a doubt, living in Dubai can be really nice. Asides the abundant shops and souks, there are 3 places that I miss so much. These places helped me save money and now that I have not been able to find equivalents in Canada, it has made me think of them the more. One of my readers (thanks babe!) had asked me which places I would love to spend time in again if I could and that’s how the idea for this post came about. I’ll just get right into it.
This Chinese market stole my heart. There is practically nothing you wouldn’t find in Dragon Mart. For my first son’s birthday years ago I had gone here to buy scooters with a friend as part of the party packs (thanks B! lol now we are in Canada together). I remember when we needed synthetic grass for our outdoor area and companies were quoting ridiculous amounts. I told my husband to give me the contract and off to Dragon Mart I went. You don’t want to know how much the synthetic grass eventually came to. Some items you can find here are – unique clothings for adults and kids, curtains, kids toys and slides, home fittings, furniture, industrial kitchen items…just name it and you’ll find it. You may need to do a bit of walking though as quality can sometimes be an issue but this is definitely a place to find affordable gems.
I have a love-hate relationship with Deira market. It’s so rowdy yet has great items. I especially love the fabrics section in this market and miss buying lace etc. I look at my collection now and i’m grateful for time well spent in Deira market. You can buy gold or costume jewelry (with guarantee). There are also some amazing tailors hidden in Deira. There’s a specific tailor some distance away at Frij Murar who is GOOOOD. He doesn’t speak so much English so communicates by asking for pictures of what you want to sew. I have never needed to alter any outfit made by him and he actually makes wedding gowns, reception outfits etc too. The only issue with Deira is the distance and traffic hence my love-hate relationship.
I miss this place because of being able to buy items in bulk. We would buy almost anything in cartons and split if needed. You can find things such as spices, herbs, souvenir items for weddings/parties, sardine, tomato paste, diaper/pull up, milk, Milo, corned beef, soap, biscuits, etc, basically just about every household item. I found it more cost effective in the long run compared to buying from the stores.
Oh I just remembered Fruit & Vegetable market as well as Outlet mall. Hmmmm i foresee a Dubai trip loading but these ticket prices are not friendly.
Do you live in Dubai? Have you been to any of these places? Do you find it cheaper to shop in these places?
Have you moved from Dubai? Do you miss any of these places (or others)? Have you found equivalent stores/shops/markets where you currently reside?
It took a while to finally reminisce and write about Dubai but this post has left a huge grin on my face.
