Express Entry 101

Express Entry 101

Express entry

In concluding this post, I mentioned the CRS calculator and received some comments on whatsapp asking to separate the Express Entry process from other posts on the site. I have modified one of the site headers as well, so it is easier to navigate and find the posts about express entry.

Please note that I am not an immigration lawyer or consultant. I just happen to understand the general process and have assisted close friends.

Skilled immigrants (Federal Skilled Workers (FSW) scheme) are chosen as permanent residents based on their ability to settle in Canada and take part in the economy. The system to manage how people with skilled work experience apply to immigrate to Canada is called Express Entry. A general overview of the process is below:

A) Check that you qualify for express entry using the Comprehensive Ranking System tool – CRS calculator. To qualify, your total score should be 400 or above. Note- This does not guarantee that you would receive the PR but the higher your score is, the better your chance.

B1) If score is lower than or too close to 400 from step 1 above, halt and either explore ways to boost your score or explore another immigration process as there are other schemes for Canada or other countries e.g Australia, New Zealand etc.

B2) If score is well above 400, check the required proof of funds depending on your family unit. This is not money that you will give the government but is required to show that yourself and your family can survive after landing in the country pending when you secure a job. You will need to show 6 months of account statement so it’s best to have an idea of how much you require early in the process so you can work on building your funds if necessary.

C) Start and complete the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

D) Write and smash the english language proficienty exam – IELTS. If funds permit, steps B,C and D can be done concurrently. The higher you score in the ielts exam, the higher the points awarded.

E) Create an express entry profile and join the pool

F) Follow the bi-weekly announcements for the draw score. When a score which is equivalent to your total score or lower is announced, you would receive an email confirming Invitation To Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence.

G) Complete and submit the application for PR

H) Regularly check your spam folder and Inbox for updates

I) Send your passport for stamping once requested

J) Congratulations!

I would expound on each step in subsequent posts. Two useful facebook groups you can join for more information are:

Disclaimer – I am not an admin in either group nor the owner of the groups. Both groups were helpful when I was going through the process.
