Home Internet

Let's Talk

I would have placed a bet of 30 billion dollars to disagree if anyone had told me I would be this excited over having home internet connection. Well, seeing as I do not have 30 billion in my account, you can ignore the above.

So much has happened since this site went live. The biggest change being that I have relocated and no longer reside in the UAE. Thus, this site will take a different turn and I will yield as the tide turns. I now live in a “city ” in a country where night is night and day is day which means that unlike UAE where night and day are day, here you look outside your window by 8pm and there’s hardly anyone outside. I was enjoying the serenity, calm, focus on family life and general feel of my new city till I went to sign up for home internet for the house we just moved into. Imagine my shock when I was informed that the earliest availability for the technician to come set up the connection was almost 7 days later. I was confused and thought I was dreaming. Living in the UAE for years got me used to an almost instant life. Things can be quite quick in my dear desert land depending on the nature of the request.

Me – “pardon, you mean I will not have internet or cable (tv) connection for about a week?”

Customer care rep (CCR) – “yes”

Me – “can I just take the boxes and set them up myself?”

CCR – “You can try but as it’s a new building, the initial connection has to be fixed by a technician”

I took the two boxes home and we tried to connect them (after all, I’m a smartie lol, i figured it wouldn’t be that hard)…..emmm yes you guessed right, nothing worked. I called the customer care line and was met with the same response that the earliest availability was almost 7 days away. I tried to use “Nigerian sense” and told them it might as well be an emergency so I needed an earlier date.

CCR – “Is there anyone in your household hooked to a life support machine that requires access to the internet please?”

Me – “err no”

CCR – ” then it is not an emergency. A technician will be with you next week. Is there anything else I can help you with please?’

Me – “bye”

It was tough trying to entertain both kids without internet or cable connection but it was also really rewarding. I didn’t know I had it in me to remain sane without my laptop but we learn everyday. Thankfully the connection has now been fixed (almost 24 hours ago) and there was actually no rush to get out my laptop immediately. The downtime sure did me good.Choosing to live an “intentional life’ daily (as much as possible) aided in my taking the time without home connection as a gift and unboxing it daily with joy as opposed to simply counting down to when there would be internet/cable and wasting precious life minutes which cannot be re-gained.  It may mean nothing to the next person who hardly even thinks of access to internet but if you know me well then you can tell why it’s a big deal to me. (Music!!! etc).

I will document my settling experience in Canada for now while I try to perhaps redesign the template of this site. Let’s see how it goes.

Are you interested in migrating to Canada as a skilled immigrant via the Express Entry Scheme? Try out the CRS calculator/tool to check if you qualify. Expect more details in the next post.

Wow. I guess they know how to take things slow over there, not the fast paced, fast paced we are doing all over the world.
